"A old-ritualist church and market on the shore of Lake Kaban in Kazan": A view of the southern shore of Lake Kaban which highlights Kazan's religious diversity. In the background are Orthodox cathedrals. In the middle distance the Haymarket mosque is clearly visible. And toward the foreground is the Four Evangelists church, run under Russian Orthodox auspices but for use by members of Kazan's "old ritualists" sects, who dissented from various official church practices.

"Gullies preserved from the ancient city of Kazan": this picture from the 1890s, intended to highlight ditches that marked the boundaries of the medieval city, also revealed a side of Kazan less often shown--the crowded and sometimes poverty-stricken neighborhoods and villages of "wooden Kazan" that nestled around the urban core.

"View of the greeting of the Smolensk Mother of God in the city of Kazan": Every year the Sedmiozhernaia replica of the Smolensk Mother of God icon--a sacred relic reputed to have saved the city from more than one epidemic and disaster--was brought into the city for several weeks of processions and ceremonies. Thousands of residents would make the overnight trip, on foot, to accompany the icon; and thousands more would line the steep hillsides of the Kreml to greet its arrival.

"Kazan's Central Marketplace": The gostinnyi dvor was the primary marketplace in the city. Burned in 1774 and rebuilt with imperial support at the end of the 18th century, the market housed hundreds of shops. Most were owned by the city, and rented to finance the local government, but a minority were owned by prosperous private individuals. The merchants in the market included Muslims, Russian Orthodox, and Orthodox dissenters; and spanned a range of social estates.
